Buy Sarees Online : Baluchari Sarees

Baluchari Saree is a unique product of Bengal which has created its own global identity because of its intricate designs and craftsmanship of weavers of Bengal.

Baluchari Saree is a handwoven saree using richly dyed silk, with intricate motifs that depicts tales and scenes from ancient epics and religious texts.
The art of Baluchuri was brought from Dhaka (in present day Bangladesh) to a small village named Baluchar on the banks of river Bhagirathi in Murshidabad district of West Bengal by Murshidkuli Khan, Nawab of Bengal, in the 18th century. Thereafter because of natural calamities the weavers of Baluchari Sarees relocated to Bishnupur in Bankura district of West Bengal. However, subsequently during British Rule, the trade was brought almost to the verge of close down as the British felt threatened by their inability to replicate this craftsmanship in their mills. In the mid 20th century the revival of Baluchari weaving was brought about by the artist Subho Thakur, who was instrumental in developing the technique of jacquard weaving which greatly simplified the process and reduced the time taken for weaving one Baluchari Saree.

At present, the Baluchari Saree has been granted the status of Geographical Indication (G.I) in India.
